For those of you who weren't able to make it to our wonderful RS activity yesterday, here is a little recap of Christine D.'s nutritional highlights!
Healthy Eating 101
1. There is no medicine or beauty product available today that can replace the benefits of healthy food.
2. Reduce sugar and empty carb intake (snack on REAL foods: fruit, nuts, veggies, whole grains, etc.)
3. Fat is not making us fat, sugar is. Our diets SHOULD include healthy fats: nuts, fish, olive oil, avocados, etc. (rather than non-healthy fats: fried foods, junk foods, etc.) Reduce sugar intake.
4. Less is more when it comes to ingredients. The fewer the ingredients listed on the label, the less it has been tampered with (processed) and the more likely it is healthier for you. Focus on sugar grams rather than fat and calorie content.
5. Organic does not always mean better, check ingredients and see how much stuff is in the item. Try to buy dairy/meat that states they do not add hormones and antibiotics. (Extra hormones are not good for kids, especially girls).
6. Best to buy organic produce for items on the list of "most contaminated with pesticides" (peaches, apples, bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, pears, grapes, spinach, lettuce, potatoes). It's good practice to always wash your produce before eating it.
7.Juicing is a great way to get your daily dose of vegetable servings. You can juice carrots, swiss chard, spinach, beet greens, fruits (but remember that fruit has a lot of sugar in it).
8. It is important to eat protein (eggs, nuts, beans, meat, dairy, seeds, etc.) with every meal to keep blood sugar levels steady.
9. Daily dose of vitamins is essential as we can't get all we need from food nowadays due to over-processing, damaged soil, shelf life of food, etc. Key vitamins include: Vitamin D, Fish Oil, Calcium/Magnesium, Multivitamin, etc. What vitamins you should take depends on your age, gender, and time of life. (See Joy Feldman book for more info).
10. SLEEP is so important. It is the way our body heals and restores itself.
11. Drink plenty of water - adults should drink, at minimum, 8 glasses (which is 8 oz) of water per day. Purchase a filtered pitcher (or some other filtering system) for improved quality of water.
*12. (Bonus) Because there are so many chemicals in most products (beauty, cleaning, etc.) these days, it would be beneficial to look for and purchase more natural products.
